Part Ⅱ
Passage One
Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage
In many ways, our society is simply not geared (使适合) for the kinds of lives that the elderly must lead. We have made medical advances that allow people to live longer than ever before, but we do not deem to know what to do with them after we have saved their lives. Too little allowance is made for the person who is no longer earning a living, who cannot walk long distances or drive a car, or who may have physical or mental disabilities that keep him from communicating with others.
The institutional care we give our older people is a good reflection of the overall attitude of our society toward the aged. In the past few years, nursing homes have received wide attention as boring, meaningless places where old people often have little else to do but to wait for the end of their lives.
One of the most shocking things about nursing homes has been the unwillingness of people on the outside to show real concern for what happens in these institutions.
Even people who are entrusting a parent to the care of a home rarely ask about the nurse-patient ratio, about the kinds of creative facilities or physical therapy equipment available, or even about the frequency of doctor’s visits. And the government has provided federal money without enforcing high standards of care.
In fact, federal standards were lowered in 1974, therefore, in some sense our concern for the aged seems to be moving backward, not forward. This picture is in striking contrast to the treatment of venerable (年高而值得尊敬的) patriarchs and matriarchs in many societies.
11. What would be the most appropriate title for this passage?
A) Institutional Care
B) The Elderly
C) Failure of Care for the Elderly
D) A National Disgrace
12. From the passage we can know that __________ .
A) our society is not geared for us to live in

D) aged people are being well treated in other countries

A) demand higher government standards
B) investigate it first
C) be ashamed of not keeping the parent in their own home

14. We can conclude from this passage that the writer feels __________.

C) a country that can help people live longer should also be able to care for them better
D) our society’s institutions need to be reformed

Passage Two
Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage
Prices determine how resources are to be used. They are also the means by which products and services that are in limited supply are rationed among buyers. The price system of the United States is a very complex network composed of the prices of all the products bought and sold in the economy as well as those of a myriad of services, including labor, professions, transportation, and public-utility services-the interrelationship of all these prices make the “system” of prices. The price of any particular product or service is linked to a broad, complicated system of prices in which everything seems to depend more or less upon everything else.
If one were to ask a group of randomly selected individuals to define “price”, many would reply that price is an amount of money paid by the buyer to the seller of a product or service, or, in other words, that price is the money value of a product or service as agreed upon in market transaction. This definition is, of course, valid as far it goes.
For a complete understanding of a price in any particular transaction, much more than the money involved must be known. Both the buyer and seller should be familiar with not only the money amount, but with the amount and quality of the product or service to be exchanged, the time and place at which the exchange will take place and payment will be made, the form of money to be used, the credit terms and discounts that apply to the transaction, guarantees on the product or service, delivery terms, return privilege, and other factors.
In other words, both the buyer and seller should be fully aware of all the factors that compose the total “package” being exchanged for the asked-for amount of money in order that they may evaluate a given price.

B) The quantity of a product.
C) The quality of a product.
D) Warranties that cover a product.
19. In the last sentence, the word “they” refers to __________.
   A) return privileges                   B) buyers and sellers
   C) cash and credits                    D) all the factors
20. The paragraph following the passage most like discusses ___________.

B) types of payment plans for service
C) theories about how products affect different levels of society
D) how certain element of a 99 price “package” influence its market value
Passage Three
Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage
We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming (把…..按能力分班) pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!
Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We ate concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning.
In our classroom, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.
Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this effectively.
An advanced pupil can do advanced work ; it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.

A) pupils will become leaders when they grow up
B) pupils can only learn from each other in “mixed-ability teaching”
C) group work provides pupils with the opportunity to learn to be capable organizers
D) pupils also learn how to participate in teaching activities

The status of women in colonial North America has been well studied and described and can be briefly summarized. Throughout the colonial period there was a marked shortage of women, which varied with the regions and was always greatest in the frontier areas. This favorable ratio enhanced women’s status and position and allowed them to pursue different careers.
The Puritans, the religious sect that dominated the early British colonies in North America, regarded idleness as a sin, and believed that life in an underdeveloped country made it absolutely necessary that each member of the community perform an economic function. Thus work for women, married or single, was not only approved, it was regarded as a civic duty.
Puritan town councils expected widows and unattached women to be self-supporting and for a long time provided needy spinsters with parcels of land. There was no social sanction (处罚措施) against married women working; on the contrary, wives were expected to help their husbands in their trade and won social approval for doing extra work in or out of the home. Needy children, girls as well as boys, were indenture (师徒合同) or apprenticed and were expected to work for their keep.
The vast majority of women worked within their homes, where their labor produced most articles needed for the family. The entire colonial production of cloth and clothing and partially that of shoes was in the hands of women. In addition to these occupations, women were found in many different kinds of employment. They were butchers, silversmiths, gunsmiths, upholsterers. They ran mills, plantations, tanyards, shipyards, and every kind of shop, tavern, and boardinghouse.
