Population Problems
Population explosion poses a serious social problem around the world, particularly in developing countries, because birth rate has been much higher in developing countries than in industrial nations.
With population expansion come a train of other formidable problems. For example, food supply can not keep pace with a rapidly growing world population, the result of which is that in some African countries many people are already starving to death while millions more suffer from malnutrition. Increasing population means that we not only have to feed more mouths, but also need to create more jobs, build more houses, and provide more education opportunities, thus bringing great pressure to bear upon the already diminishing land resources. All these grave problems threaten the well-being of mankind.
The most important thing for us today to realize is that we can not go on expanding human population for ever and that it is high time we took urgent and immediate measures to bring it under control. In a bid to reduce the population pressure and raise people’s living standards, China, with the world’s largest population, adopted the program of family planning and advocated the policy of “One couple, one child” in the early 1980s. This effort has been very effective and won worldwide acclaim.
