Make for (Something) 前往/促成
1. = to move towards something or a place 前往
• Make for the hills, a tsunami is approaching! 快到丘陵那里去,海啸就要来了!
• He made for his apartment a couple of hours ago. 他几小时前就回公寓了。
2. = to contribute to, lead to or cause a result or situation. 促成
• Shakespeare's writing makes for a difficult read. 莎士比亚的作品很难懂。
• Both candidates are popular so it should make for an interesting election.
这两位候选人都很受欢迎,这次选举会非常有趣。
Make (somebody/something) into (somebody/something) 改变(或转变)某人(或某物);把(某材料)做成(某物)
1. = to convert one thing into another thing 把...变为
• His parents made his bedroom into a billiards room once he moved out. 一旦他搬出去,他的父母就会把他的卧室变为台球室。
• His father said that joining the army would make him into a real man, but he was wrong.
他父亲说参军会让他变为一个真正的男子汉,但他错了。
Make (something) out 看出;听出/填写
1. = to just be able to hear, read or see something (费力地) 看出; 听出;读出
• He spoke so quietly we could hardly make out what he was saying.

• If you can make out the billboard from such a distance you really have excellent vision.

2. = to fill out the details of a document (usually a check) 填写

1. = to try to understand and find a reason for something 理解
• I don't know what to make of her suddenly unfriendly attitude towards me. 我不知道要怎么理解她突然不友善的态度。

2. = to think and have an opinion about something 从某事物中得出观点

1. = To hurry away, especially in order to escape
• The thieves had to make off in their car when the police arrived. 警察赶到时,小偷已经弃车而逃。
• The pop star made off from the concert before the fans could find him. 在粉丝发现他前,这位流行歌手就已经匆匆离开了。
Make off with 偷走
1. = To steal something and (quickly) take it away.
• The looters made off with all the laptops that were in the computer store.

1. = To understand a person's character
• Since she is normally quiet and reserved it is hard to make her out.

1. = Transfer ownership
• The government of Mugabe made all the lands of the whites over to black African farmers.

Make up
1. = the composition of something 构成
• The committee was made up of all the regional managers. 委员会由所有的区域经理组成。
2. = combination of qualities that form a part of someone's character 性格
• Flexibility and integrity are key elements of her make up. 她主要的特点是灵活性和一体性。
3. = to apply make up, rouge, powder, eyeliner, etc. Also to make somebody up 化妆
• The actors must make themselves up before going on stage. 演员上台前一定要化妆。
4. = to invent a story, usually to deceive or entertain 编故事
• My four year old niece is always making up stories, last week she told me that she and her friends flew to the moon.
我四岁的侄女经常编故事,上周她告诉我她和她的朋友飞到了月球。
5. = To form or constitute something 组成
• The class is made up of three sections of conversation and two sections of written exercises.

1. = the compensate for something; to replace something lost
